E T P – Experience The Planets

One of the links in Dark Roasted Blend's latest Link Latte was for the following site, E T P - Experience The Planets. Experience The Planets is an image gallery inspired by the science of our solar system. The scenes in each image depict an aspect of our solar system that is grounded in scientific theory, showing the planets in a beautiful yet possibly realistic way. The gallery also has pleasing ambient background music, complementing the art perfectly.

Currently the project led by Greg Martin has just a few images with spaces for plenty more for each of the eight planets. Those that are available can be downloaded in a selection of wide-screen resolutions and make great desktop wallpapers. My personal favourite and current wallpaper, both at work and home, is "Waters Of Europa" from the Jupiter collection, by an Czech artist named Josef Bartoň. The Known Universe

Check out this amazing animated fly-through of the known universe, starting from Tibet and travelling 13.7 billion light years to our cosmic horizon, then back again. The video is from the American Museum Of Natural History using their four-dimensional mapping data to create an astronomically accurate map of the universe as we know it so far.

I have always thought that with so many galaxies and stars out there that there surely must be life out there somewhere. However, after watching this video it occurred to me that although it might indeed be out there, if it's 100,000,000 light years away the chances of bumping into it are pretty damn slim.
